Blues Fest 2012 Day 2
Toots Drops The Pressure While The Temperature Rises
The second day of the 2012 Waterfront Blues Festival was a great way to cure everyone's July 4th hangovers, with plenty of smoking hot acts playing their hearts out while the thermosat began to rise. While the crowd wasn't quite at capacity like the previous evening, plenty of people came straight from work to get down, while those on vacation made of day of it.
JJ Grey and Mofro brought a bit of swamp rock to the main stage in the early evening. Plenty of fiesty women were front and center when Grey started wailing on a harmonica, singing a driving song about his daddy. As he sang the songs that reminded him of his Florida home, he told the crowd how happy he was to be in a more temperate climate this evening, but there wasn't a dry brow left when this set came to an end.
Booker T is a legend, having produced and played on some of the most memorable tunes in music. He brought a trio of heavy hitters with him last night as they toured through some of music's great tunes, and plenty of his own as well. Some of his more recent tunes, from his Grammy-winning album The Road From Memphis, had a bit more modern flow to them, thanks to his work with members of the Roots on the record.
Toots and the Maytals finished off the crowd that night, with the inimitable Toots dancing like a man five times younger. At 66 years young, he led the crowd through hit after hit in the band's catalog, with the entire crowd a sea of bobbing heads and flailing arms. It sounded like (and smelled like) a college dorm room by halfway through the set, but the rolling beat and smiles from Toots were just too infectious. People threw hesitation to the wind and let go as the sun set behind the skyline.
