Calexico @ Aladdin Theatre
Joined by The Dodos
Last night at the Aladdin Theater, fans were treated to a solid bill consisting of the Dodos and Calexico. The eclectic evening of music was a perfect way to top off an amazing weekend of food and music. The festive sounds of Calexico seemed appropriate for such a colorful day. As residents 2000 have noticed in the past few days, fall has definitely arrived. But based on the enthusiasm of last night’s capacity crowd, people are seemingly always ready to dance in Portland, regardless of the season.
First up was The Dodos, a San Francisco band consisting of Meric Long and Logan Kroeber. The band is currently working on new material, but took a break to join friends Calexico on tour. The thunderous drum work of Kroeber complimented the rhythmic guitar lines that Long layered into each song effortlessly. The band played a great set of tunes to begin the show, and it was apparent there were many fans of the band in the crowd.
Once the crowd was nice and warmed up, Tuscon- based Calexico took the stage. Main members Joey Burns and John Convertino always put on an extraordinary show, filled with indie rock, Latin, and even country music overtones. The band the duo have been touring with recently sounds fantastic as well, and the crowd was on its feet most of the evening. The band even brought Los Lobos member Steve Berlin on stage for a couple of tunes.
The band’s recent album Algiers was the centerpiece of the show, with the band playing a slew of new tunes. I’ll never tire of the eclectic but universal feel of the band’s sound, it continuously puts out admirable work year after year and doesn’t seem to be showing any signs of slowing down. The Portland audience was grateful for the group’s presence and vocalized their appreciation throughout the evening. The humble band generously bowed to the packed venue as they left the stage at the end of the night, closing the weekend and bringing us ever closer to Halloween.
