Doo Doo Funk All-Stars
@The Goodfoot Lounge
The Doo Doo Funk All-Stars have one mission on their minds – resurrect old school funk from the depths of relative obscurity and deliver it up to the masses. With decades of practice between this eight-member 2000 crew, they did just that last night with a manner not unlike George Clinton and the Parliament Funkadelic.
With Tony Ozier acting as the master of ceremonies, The Doo Doo Funk All Stars wasted no time inciting raucous bouts of dancing and uninhibited screams from the night’s attendees, to which their were many. Behind Tony, a bevy of musicians amazed the crowd with the mastery of their craft. Band members include Tyrone Hendrix and Dennis Dove on drums, Errick Lewis on bass, Steveland Swatkins on keys and talkbox, with vocals from Etta Ward, Nafisaria Scroggins, and Michael Whitmore.
To date, these incredible musicians have accompanied some amazingly talented bands including Erykah Badu, The Wu-Tang Clan, India Arie, Bernie Worrell, Average White Band, Al Green, and The Foreign Exchange. However, after years of playing for others, The Doo Doo Funk All Stars resolved to form their own funk experience.
You might wonder, why so many members? Isn’t eight people a little excessive? Well, not if you’re doing funk justice. Two drummers might seem like a rhythmic overload, however, the collaboration between Tyrone Hendrix and Dennis Dove on tracks like “Keep The Funk Alive” never seemed out of place; in fact, it made for a more visceral experience.
Beyond the rapping of Ozier, the attention fell upon the jaw-dropping voices of Etta Ward, Nafisaria Scroggins, and Michael Whitmore. On tracks like “Dookay”, all three of these amazing singers belted some of the most soulful melodies that have ever graced the walls of Goodfoot.
Keep your eyes peeled for this group, as they will no doubt never cease to amaze you. Besides the Goodfoot and the Someday Lounge, The Doo Doo Funk All-Stars regularly play at the Jolly Roger on eleventh and Morrison.
