Labelmates 2012 @ Holocene
Portland’s Independent Record Companies Take Center Stage
Last night Holocene threw its th 2000 ird annual celebration of Portland’s independent record labels, appropriately dubbed Labelmates. The place was packed with enthusiastic music fiends crowding tables strewn with wax and cassette tapes of some of the best local and regional music around.
Some of the notable labels included Eggy Tapes, High Scores and Records, Tender Loving Empire, Futro Records, Mississippi Records, Audio Dregs, and many more. This was truly a music nerd's paradise, and I couldn’t help but empty my wallet on some choice vinyl.
There was also an array of music video premieres from local artists, including Brainstorm, Onuinu, The Woolen Men, and lots more. It’s great to see so many bands still putting such time and effort into creating these visual representations of their music.
After a series of DJ sets from representatives of a few of the local labels present, buzz band Pictorials celebrated their album release with a lively set. The debut EP, entitled Learning, comes from their own imprint Déjà View. You can check out a stream of the new EP here. Recorded with Dylan Mageriek (starfucker, Badman recording co. Weinland) at Type Foundry Studios, the new tunes are turning plenty of heads, including Black Moth Super Rainbow whom the band toured with earlier this year. The band’s set last night was a fantastic display from the trio, with singer and guitarist Morgan Nicholson belting out song after song in sort of a melodic trance with the enthusiastic crowd cheering him on..
