Other Lives @Wonder Ballroom
With Indians
A crowd of people lined up outside of the Wonder Ballroom on Saturday night, reservedly bearing the chilly October rain in anticipation of catching a pair of bands take the stage for a night of amazing music. Other Lives headlined a sh 2000 ow that had the crowd soon forgetting their rain soaked clothing and quickly becoming enveloped in a great show.
First on for the night was Indians, a solo project/musical alter ego of Soren Lokke Juul from Copenhagen, Denmark. Promoting his debut album due out in January, Indians played a whimsical set of soft swaying poignant songs that had some of the audience closing their eyes and slowly swaying along with the music. Vocals that soared to some lofty heights were accompanied by the varying musical accompaniment executed passionately by Soren. Switching from the keyboard and some heavily synthesized sounds to a more classical piano playing, then pulling out an acoustic guitar for a few songs, it was clear that Soren took pride in and knew how to play his music. One could see his heart and passion in the music he played and his clear understanding of what he wanted the audience to hear, producing a set that was both low-key yet emotionally and technically impressive.
Next on stage were headliners Other Lives from Stillwater, Oklahoma. When you first see the unassuming look of front man Jesse Tabish roaming the stage it may throw the casual audience member into thinking they would be in store for a mellow and subdued set, those people would been mistaken. As soon as the band took the stage the energy they produced was palpable throughout the entire audience as they swung into high gear and got the crowd cheering and dancing. The music is nothing but pure energy, it’s an entity of its own and an experience, comprised of more than just the talented instrument playing or the unique and powerful vocals, instead they blend all this together to create an atmosphere and vibe that is unmistakably their own. Each song the band played was unique in its own right but the set as a whole and the musical environment they created was the true powerhouse of the band. To relegate the sound to a single or even a couple genres would be diluting the true center of the sound the band has created, but it was clear to anyone in the audience that what they created was something new and enjoyable.
The band is coming off a recent stint opening for the first leg of Radiohead’s North American tour earlier this year. Other Lives is now promoting their latest album Tamer Animals as well as an EP entitled Mind the Gap by headlining a tour of their own.
